Water Babies (May 2006)
Subtitled, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby and written for Kingsley's son Grenville, The Water Babies was an
exceptionally popular fantasy serialized in Macmillan's Magazine 1862-3, then published in 1863 with Noel
Paton's illustrations. It is the story of Tom, a young boy who is a chimney sweep employed by the brutal bully
Mr Grimes. Falling down a chimney, Tom finds himself in the presence of a girl called Ellie. Her cleanliness
and neatness makes Tom aware for the first time of his own dirty blackened body. He is chased out of Ellie's
house and falls into the river where he enters a magical underwater world and becomes a water-baby.

Tom, a little Chimney Sweep

This is the story of Tom, a little chimney sweep, who
loses his way in the chimney flues of a great house in the
north of England. He finds himself in a little girl’s room and
for the first time is aware that he is so dirty, by contrast.

He tries to escape up the chimney, but awakens the little
girl who screams. A great chase ensues and Tom
manages to lose his pursuers. He slides down a steep
crag, exhausted, and receives aid from the school
teacher in Vendale, who gives him water, and bread and
a place to sleep.
Like Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland or
White's The Sword in the Stone, this tale explores the
possibilities of an alternative world following certain
transformations. Here we meet the caddis fly, the
salmon and other creatures that teach Tom morality.
This is in the didactic vein of many nineteenth century
texts for children, but these days some of the sentiments
of the story (particularly those which suggest the moral
education of the poor) may seem patronising.
Most readers (and viewers!), however, will be carried
away by the fantasy and its sense of hope and
possibility in life just as Queen Victoria was. The famous
characters of Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs
Bedonebyasyoudid appear in the story, and Kingsley
portrays the water world in consistently vivid and
exciting manner.
World Premiere of this musical
was held in Zurich (really!)
Delirious, and desiring to be clean like the little girl, Ellie, he steps
into the river and falls asleep. The fairies and water babies wash
him and turn him into a water baby, and now his adventures
begin. The water babies may not show themselves until he has
learned not to torment the sea creatures. He has glimpses of them
and hears of them from the sea creatures, but only sees them
when he helps Mr. Lobster escape the lobster trap.

Tom has many adventures in the sea and even meets Ellie again,
who teaches him how to lose his prickly nature, but only when he
sets out to find his master, old Grimes, who mistreated him, and
beat him daily, never giving him enough to eat, is he allowed to go
with Ellie to that special place she goes to called home.
